iPad for Seniors for Dummies 2nd Edition

Did you buy your parents an iPad? Or are you a luddite when it comes to all things Apple? Wiley has released iPad for Seniors for Dummies, 2nd edition, aimed at those of us who are of the older set who have an iPad or ipad 2  but want to learn more about the features of the device by following along to a guide rather than turn the thing on and figure out what to do next. Want to learn how to exchange email? There is a chapter on email, including setting up your Gmail, Yahoo, or AOL account, setting up a POP3 email account, opening and reading mail, replying to email, creating and sending a message, searching your email and deleting and organizing.
Want to go into the future and Facetime with your grandkids? There is an overview and a chapter on using Facetime, that Jetson-esque technology that is here now, and available on your iPad 2 or iPhone 4. Chapter topics include:

  • Buying your iPad
  • Looking over the Home Screen
  • Getting Going (charging the battery, download iTunes from your computer, etc.)
  • Taking Advantage of Accessibility features
  • Browsing the Internet with Safari
  • Working with email
  • Face to Face with the Grandkids using Facetime
  • Shopping the iTunes Store
  • Apps
  • Using your iPad as an e-reader
  • Playing with Music on iPad
  • Playing with Photos
  • Getting the Most out of Video Features
  • Playing Games
  • Finding your way with Maps
  • Keeping on schedule with Calendar
  • Managing Contacts
  • Making Notes
  • Troubleshooting and Maintaining your iPad

The book, obviously targeting the baby boomer generation, is an easy read and offers images that are easily viewable that accompany the text. Screenshots of the iPad interface are enlarged and there are generous use of arrows to help readers along the way as they explore the book and work on their iPads at the same time, which I think is the best way to work with this title.

FX PhotoStudio HD for iPad review

PhotoStudio HD is a collection of 187 effects that you can easily apply to the images in your iPad’s Photos album. The effects are akin to those you would find in an image editor such as Photoshop or Corel Photo-Paint, without the other image editing capabilities and pulled out as an iPad app. The effects come in a variety of styles that include Art, Blur, Color Fantasy, Color Temperature, Cross Processed, Distortion, Frames, Glow, Groovy Lo-Fi, Grunge, Hue, Image Contrast, Overlay, Photo Styles, SFX, Sketch, Symmetry, Texturize, Vignettes, and Vintage. In app purchases are available for Art Frames, Color Lenses, Color Strokes, Hollywood FX, and Classic Frames. These categories are $0.99 each.

Once finished adding effects, you can export the images out to a variety of places

Once finished adding effects, you can export the images out to a variety of places, including social media sites such as Flickr and Facebook

The app offers a range of tools that make it easy to work with your images. You can crop, rotate and resize, undo and redo, and print. You can preview the effects in low quality, normal, and high quality before saving the effect, as well as hide those effects that you don’t often use. You can also turn the “Amazing Facts” feature off or on. These factoids appear when you apply an effect to the image, during the processing of the effect. You can also save effects as favorites, so you don’t have to scroll through all the 10 categories or down the entire list of 187 effects. Once you apply an effect, you can further adjust the effect via sliders. Usually you can tweak the amount of effect you want applied (denoted with negative and positive signs in the slider),  distortion or frequency, gamma dispersion, brightness. All these parameters are dependent on what effect you are applying. Some have multiple sliders while others only require a single slider.

PhotoStudio HD has no save as function per se. The way to save an image with an effect applied is to apply the effect, make the adjustments, and then save the image to your Photos. Go back to PhotoStudio and then press the undo icon. This will revert your image to the original. You cannot, however, rename the file in PhotoStudio HD. What I’ve done to get around this is to send the image file as an email and then use the subject to name the file, such as Crosspro1 or Dirty Picture 1, which corresponds to the name(s) of the PhotoStudio HD effects applied to that image.

PhotoStudio HD is a classic example of an iPad app that enables you to actually create new content from existing content. It offers a whole bunch of free effects that are easy to apply to your images. And when applied, you can save your new creations to your iPad’s Photo Album, to the Documents folder, clipboard, straight to email, or to social networking sites such as Flickr, Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter. It is a straightforward application that works and offers some nifty effects.

QuickPix 1.2.1 for iOS review

For those who are not satisfied with the standard camera controls that ship with the iPhone (or iPad), Two teeth Technologies has an application called QuickPix that makes the standard camera 100 percent better. Now in version 1.2.1, QuickPix offers a range of features and settings that enable you to better control the camera. I reviewed the app on an iPhone 3Gs, but it works with the iPhone 4, iPad 2 and iPod touch with camera. Your icons will vary based on the device you use. On an iPhone 3Gs, when you launch the app, there are four icons on the main display; the familiar video camera and still camera icons, the Photo Browser icon that resides between the two, and a settings icon in the upper right corner.

Settings include Special modes, which feature RapidFire Mode (hold the still button for burst capture), VideoPix mode, which enables you to capture still images while in video mode; and QuickPic mode which is a setting to automatically take a photo when QuickPix in launched.

Camera mode features a Focus Lock feature which locks the focus after a tap; Exposure Lock, which locks the exposure after a tap or double tap; and White Balance lock, which locks the White Balance on tap.

The final user adjustable settings deal with the interface. You can change to a Grid setting, which gives you grid based viewing; Pinch to zoom, and Display zoom slider. When you pinch to zoom the slider moves accordingly. Or you can just use the slider. When you take a photo, a picon appears between the video camera icon and the camera icon. Press down on the picon and the Photo Browser opens within the QuickPix application. Rather than navigate with a swipe of your finger, you navigate by pressing the arrow buttons. There is also a custom button mode that enables you to change the look of the video camera and camera icons. These range from a flip out viewfinder video camera, to a hand sketched model.

QuickPix adds more capabilities to the standard camera that ships with Apple’s mobile devices. It gives the camera the capability to shoot in rapid succession, up to two pictures per second on the iPhone 3Gs and 4, 14 pictures per second on the iPad 2, and six pictures per second on the iPod touch. It has a built in Focus Lock, White Balance Lock, and Exposure Lock, giving you more control over what the camera outputs. And you can capture still images while shooting video. For $0.99, QuickPix 1.2.1 adds more than enough functionality to the iPhone’s camera. Now if it could only improve the image quality on the iPad 2.

QuickPix 1.2.1 is a very cool app for those who take lots of pictures with their iOS devices. Super LIKE.
